Gibson's Anti-Semitic Tirade
I have to link to this story -- Gibson's Anti-Semitic Tirade.
It just confirms what we basically already know: despite protestations to the contrary, the uber-Catholic, right-wing Gibson is a wholesale anti-semite. I don't care if you think Israel is responsible for a lot of the middle east mess, making remarks about a people who are not all Israelis or even pro-Israel is pretty damning evidence of racism without basis in fact.
It also makes me giggle at all the Gibson apologists who tried vainly to convince me that right-wing Catholicism was not anti-semitic (as a movement) when the Passion of the Christ came out. But really, Gibson is the public face of right-wing Catholicism. And now he has spoken. Drunkenly.
Addendum: I don't care about this "cover up" arc the news media is reporting.

What do I think? I think it's true what they say -- in vino veritas. People can get angry or mean or silly when they're drunk, but whatever they do, they're always honest. Sort of. Certainly, what they say reflects real feelings, misgivings, whatever that the sober man would have, even though those feelings or beliefs might not necessarily be core beliefs because, hey! The guy's drunk, after all.
I got drunk once and went on a tirade about how much I hated an old roommate. I didn't actually hate the guy, but I HAD been pretty damn angry with him earlier that day. Drunken statements of opinion are generally true, but in extreme cases I'd still take them with a grain of salt.
So, is Mel Gibson an anti-Semite? I'm going to say "probably." I'm not apologizing for the guy -- that was some pretty hateful shit. I'm just saying we should be level-headed about this.
